Hi my name is Steve and I am the Secretary and Treasurer of BSARS. I first became interested in radio in 1967 when I asked my father to bring home an application for radio licence from the local post office. Believing it was a simple matter to fill in a form and get a licence, how wrong could I have been.

My school studies were at it's height in 1967, exams were due in few months time, and it was going to be difficult to study or take any other exams.

I remember having, and making crystal sets that fitted inside a math box. The antenna was a long piece of wire that fixed to the school fence surrounding the play yard. As crystal sets got there power from this wirw as well as being an antenna it showed that you did not need batteries to power small items as this.

The house hold did have a few radios but it was mostly TV's as my father was rather good at mending them. His usual trick was to use half a side of a wooden peg, which fixed most things!! We had an old black and white TV from the late 50's that survived until well into the 90's.

My claim to fame is that I once lived in the house that Jack McVitie was allegedly killed by a member of the Kray twins (97 Evering Road, Stoke Newington). The house was split into 3 flats, in the 12 years that we lived there, we lived in all of the flats.

During the following years I came across other radio amateurs but never really got into it in a major way.

Instead I kept exhibition Budgerigars, canaries and British birds reasonably successful at some of the big shows around the country. I also kept racing pigeons and did ok with those as well.

It wasn't till 2003 , after being made redundant, that I decide to get my licence. I took my foundation in June 2003 and took my advanced in December 2003. This was in the days when you could go straight for the old RAE exam, the last one being done in December 2003. My thanks to my then tutor G4DRV Jim Harris.

I am a registered Trainer for the three levels of training, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced.

My current rigs are a Kenwood TS450S AT, Icom 706 MKII and a Yaesu 2100B linear. The antenna is a Carolina Windom 10 - 80 Special. I use Signalink USB for data modes and HRD for all logging.

For more information regarding rigs and competitions that I take part in you can contact me on m0ssr@aol.com or visit my web site WWW.M0SSR.COM
